From Custom House station to Tower Hill station .. to see Tower of London and Tower Bridge .. amidst drizzling

Walked down to Tower of London from Tower Hill station

THE TOWER OF LONDON …

MIGHTY FORTRESS.  ROYAL PALACE.  INFAMOUS PRISON.

Built in 1070 by William the Conqueror.

Took 20 years to build. Masons were from Normandy, the Stones from Caen in France and labour by Englishmen.

This most secure castle in the land guarded royal possessions and the royal family in times of war and rebellion.  Also used as prison, as the Kings and the Queens imprisoned their rivals and enemies within its walls.  Even after nearly 1000 years, it has the capacity to fascinate as well to horrify.

The Tower houses the world’s most famous jewels including the magnificent Imperial State Crown.

The Tower attracts over three million visitors a year.

We at the iconic castle, His Majesty's Royal Palace and Fortress of the Tower of London, on the north bank of the River Thames.

WHITE TOWER

Built by William the Conqueror over 900 years ago, it’s a magnificent example of Norman architecture at the heart of the Tower of London.  Instantly recognisable, it is the most famous castle keep in the world and  an iconic symbol of London & Britain.

The White Tower is a physical manifestation of power.  Along with the rest of the Tower fortress, the White Tower is part of a World Heritage Site.

Inside is a unique Romanesque chapel, the beautiful 11th-century Chapel of St John the Evangelist.  It is the most complete surviving example of early Anglo-Norman royal ecclesiastical architecture.  It is set within a semi-circular projection — known as an apse, which is typical of ecclesiastic architecture — on the eastern face of William's keep.

The Chapel was built as a place of worship for William the Conqueror.  It was always intended to be spectacular, giving the worshiper the sense of being at the centre of a much larger church. Its imposing columns, carved capitals, high gallery and aisle for processions were built to impress. It is one of the many features of the White Tower built to show the power of the King. Over the centuries it was witness to some truly historic and spectacular events.

We experienced this grand space, where medieval kings and queens would have worshipped.

The White Tower is the Home of the Royal Armouries

showcases the historic and world-class Royal Armouries collections, including the 350-year-old exhibition, Line of Kings, as well as other treasures.

There are many unique and extraordinary arms and and armours on display, including the magnificent royal armours of Henry VIII, Charles I and James II.
