DELHI (3)

25-1-2023 … ( continuing )

INDIA GATE …

At the centre of New Delhi stands the 138 feet tall India Gate.  It stands on a low base of red Bharatpur stone and rises in stages to a huge cornice moulding above a frieze with sunburst motifs. The shallow domed bowl at the top was intended to be filled with burning oil on anniversaries.  The memorial-gate hexagon complex, with a diameter of about 2,051 ft covers approximately 3,290,000 sq ft in area.

It commemorates the 70,000 Indian soldiers who lost their lives fighting for the British Army during the World War I. The memorial bears the names of more than 13,516 British and Indian soldiers killed in the Northwestern Frontier in the Afghan war of 1919.

Amar Jawan Jyoti, or the flame of the immortal soldier, is a structure consisting of black marble plinth, with reversed rifle, capped by war helmet, bound by four urns, each with the permanent light (jyoti) from compressed natural gas flames, erected under the India gate after India got its independence. The eternal flame burns day and night under the arch to to commemorate Indian soldiers martyred in the war of the liberation of Bangladesh in December 1971.

During nightfall, India Gate is dramatically floodlit while the fountains nearby make a lovely display with coloured lights. India Gate stands at one end of Rajpath, and the area surrounding it is generally referred to as 'India Gate'. Surrounding the imposing structure is a large expanse of lush green lawns, which is a popular picnic spot. The Republic Day Parade starts from Rashtrapathi Bhavan and passes around the India Gate.

We are deprived of going inside the India Gate as tomorrow (26th January) happens to be Republic Day.  Chosen a wrong time to visit New Delhi.

LOTUS MANDIR …

The Lotus Temple, located in East of Nehru place, is built in the shape of a lotus flower and is set among the lush green landscaped gardens.  The structure is made up of pure white marble.  It is open to all, regardless of religion or any other qualification. The building is composed of 27 free-standing marble-clad "petals" arranged in clusters of three to form nine sides, with nine doors opening onto a central hall with a height of slightly over 34 meters and a capacity of 1,300 people.  Around the blooming petals there are nine pools of water, which light up, in natural light. It looks spectacular at dusk when it is flood lit.
