An ancient scripture 'Dharma Sindhu'  mentions that this particular Narayanbali-Nagbali ritual should be done only at Trimbakeshwar. The references about this age-old tradition are also found in 'Skandh Puran' and 'Padma Puran'.

"தர்ம சிந்து" என்கிற ஓர் ஆதிகாலத்து தர்மசாஸ்திர நூலில், நாராயணபலி-நாகபலி எனும் சமயகருமம் திரிம்பகேஸ்வர்தில்தான் பண்ண வேண்டும் என்று குறிப்படப்பட்டுள்ளது. பழங்காலத்து சமயநூல்களான ஸ்கந்த புராணத்திலும், பத்ம புராணத்திலும் இதுபற்றி குறிப்பீடுகள் இருக்கிறது.

Narayan bali is done to get rid of ancestral curse (Pitru dosh /Pitru Shaap) while Nag bali is done to get rid of sin performed by killing snake, specially Cobra.

பித்ருதோஷ பித்ருசாப நிவர்த்திக்காக நாராயணபலியும், நாகதோஷ நிவர்த்திக்காக நாகபலியும் பண்ண வேண்டும்.

Narayan Bali ritual is done to fulfill the unsatisfied desires of the ancestral souls which are stuck in the world and trouble their progeny. Narayan Bali consists of the same ritual as Hindu funeral. An artificial body mostly made of wheat flour is used. Mantras are used to invoke such souls who are having certain wishes remaining attached. The ritual makes them possess the body and the funeral frees them to other world.

பித்ருலோகம் போகமுடியாமல் சந்ததிகளை துன்புறுத்தும் அகால மரணம், துர்மரணம் அடைந்த பித்ருக்களின் ஆத்மா சாந்தி அடைவதற்காகச் செய்யப்படும் வழிபாட்டுச் சடங்கு 'நாராயணபலி'. இறந்தபிறகு செய்யும் பன்னிரெண்டாம்நாள் சபிண்டீகரண முறைப்படி ஒரு மனிதஉருவம் செய்யப்படும். இங்கு அதை கோதுமைமாவில் செய்வார்கள். மந்திரங்கள் மூலம் அந்த ஆத்மாக்களை இந்த மனிதஉருவதில் புகுத்தி ஸ்ராத்த ஸம்ஸகாரங்களை செய்து, அந்த ஆத்மாக்களை பித்ருலோகம் செல்ல வழிவகுப்பார்கள்.

Nagbali ritual is done to get rid of sin of killing nag (Cobra). In this ritual also the funeral is performed on the body of snake made with wheat dough.

நாகபலி சடங்கும், நாராயணபலி மாதிரி மனிதஉருவத்திற்கு பதில் நாகப்பாம்பு உருவம் செய்து ஸம்ஸகாரங்களை செய்வார்கள்.

Narayan Nagbali is performed to get respite from various problems like Bhoot Pishach Badha, unsuccessful in Business, Family health problems, Educational hindrances, Marriage Problems, Accidental Death, Unnecessary expenses, all kinds of Curses.

பூத பிசாச உபத்திரவங்கள், தொழிலில் தோல்வி, பணவிரயம், உடல்உபாதைகள், திருமணம் கல்வி தடங்கல்கள், துர்மரணங்கள், பித்ரு பிரேத நாக சாபங்கள், இவைகளின் நிவர்த்திக்காக செய்யப்படும் சமயகருமம் "நாராயண நாகபலி".

It is a Three Day ritual and to be started on a particular day and time (muhurta). The devotees should take a holy bath in Kushvart Tirth and resolve to give dashdaan (give ten things in charity). After offering prayers at the Trimbakeshwar temple, they go to the dharmashala at the confluence of rivers Godavari and Ahilya for performing Narayan Nagbali.

இது ஓர் மூன்று நாள் காரியம். இதற்கு நாள் நக்ஷ்த்ரம் பார்த்து தேதி குறிப்பிடவேண்டும். குஷ்வர்த் தீர்த்ததில் நீராடி, தசதானம் (சாஸ்த்ரோப்படி 10 தானங்கள்) செய்து, ஆலயம் சென்று திரிம்பகேஸ்வரரிடம் ப்ராதிர்த்துக்கொள்ள வேண்டும்.  கோதாவரி நதியும், அஹில்யா நதியும் சங்கமிக்கும் இடத்திலிருக்கும் தர்மசாலாவில் இந்த 'நாராயண நாகபலி' காரியங்களை செய்யவேண்டும்.

( அகால மரணம் மற்றும் துர்மரணம் அடைந்தவர்களுக்கு பித்ருக்களின் ஆத்மா சாந்தி அடைவதற்காகச் செய்யப்படும் நாராயண பலி எனும் பூஜை ராமேஸ்வரம் தலத்தில் 21 பிண்டங்கள் (ஒரு தலைமுறைக்கு ஒன்று வீதம்) வைத்து வழிபாடுவார்கள். 
தெற்கு நோக்கிச் செல்லும் புண்ணிய நதியான காவிரி நதியுடன் மேலும் இரண்டு நதிகள் சங்கமிக்கும் பவானி கூடுதுறையில் நீராடி, 77 தலைமுறையினருக்காக 7 பிண்டங்கள் வைத்து  பித்ருக்களுக்கான காரியங்களைச் செய்து ஸ்ரீசங்கமேஸ்வரருக்கு வில்வ மாலை சார்த்தி வழிபாடுவார்கள். )

त्रिपिंडी श्राध्‍द . Tripindi Shradh . த்ரிபிண்டி ஸ்ராத்தம்

Tripindi Shradha is an offering in the memory of the dear departed. If for three consecutive years the offerings are not made to the dear departed then the dead gets vehement, so to calm them these offerings are made.
Shradh must be performed to resolve such calamities. Its assertion is mentioned in "Shradha Chintamani".

நமது பித்ருக்களுக்கு தெடர்ந்து மூன்று வருடகாலங்கள் ஸ்ராத்தம் தர்ப்பணம் செய்யாவிட்டால், அவர்கள் மனம் அவதியுற்று கடும்கோபம் கொள்வார்கள்.  அவர்களை சாந்தப்படுத்தி மனம் சந்தோஷம் அடைய 'த்ரிபிண்டி ஸ்ராத்தம்' திரிம்பகேஸ்வர் க்ஷேத்ரத்தில் பண்ண வேண்டும். "ஸ்ராத்த சிந்தாமணி" என்கிற நூலில் இது வலியுறுத்தப்பட்டுள்ளது.
