TODAI-JI (東大寺) TEMPLE
(Great Eastern Temple) …
A Buddhist temple, one of Japan's most famous and historically significant Temples.
Todaiji Temple is a complex of buildings that includes the world's largest wooden structure, the 48m (157 foot)-high Daibutsu-den (Great Buddha Hall), built in 743AD which houses a darkened figure of the Cosmic Buddha (Dainichi Nyorai) and a 15m tall (49 foot) gilt bronze Daibutsu (Great Buddha) cast in 749AD, also the largest of its kind in the world.
The seated Buddha represents Vairocana and is flanked by two Bodhisattvas.
The statue weighs 500 tons is a masterpiece of Tempyo Period (729-764) art.
Todaiji's grounds are spacious and cover most of northern Nara Park including a number of smaller temple halls and sites of interest around the Daibutsuden Hall.
Along the approach to Todaiji stands the Nandaimon Gate, a large wooden gate watched over by two fierce looking statues. Representing the Nio Guardian Kings, the statues are designated national treasures together with the gate itself.
