The Alpine Grandeur: A Day Tour from Zurich to the Bernina Pass

from 8am to 8pm .. Train Tour of Switzerland

What an ambitious and absolutely stunning one-day journey! 

The route we planned took us through some of Switzerland's most beautiful landscapes that includes the world-famous Bernina Express line, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.  

It was a breathtaking immersion into the Swiss Alps, covering a diverse range of landscapes from urban centres to high-alpine passes.


Zurich - Chur - St. Moritz - Poschiavo 


Walked from our Stay to Zurich Oerlikon station .. 

from there to Chur by a fast InterCity train.  

with a change at Zurich HB

Zurich to Chur: 

The first leg to Chur, the oldest town in Switzerland.

This segment transitions quickly from the busy Swiss plateau to the scenic entry point of the Alps in Graubünden canton.


On way to Chur from Zurich..

Chur to St. Moritz: 

From Chur, took the initial section of the renowned Rhaetian Railway network, potentially following the Albula Line. 

This part is an engineering marvel and a precursor to the Bernina Express line.

Enjoyed the numerous spiral tunnels designed to gain altitude gradually and the iconic Landwasser Viaduct, a magnificent limestone structure soaring 65 meters above a gorge. 

Passed through charming villages and ascending valleys before arriving in the glamorous resort town of St. Moritz in the Engadine region.

St. Moritz to Poschiavo: 

This segment is the prelude to the official Bernina Express route. Passed through Pontresina.  Then begun the serious climb towards the main alpine pass. 

The landscape transforms dramatically as we ascended to the highest point of the line.

The highest point reached on the Rhaetian Railway is Ospizio Bernina at 7400 feet above sea level, situated near the beautiful Lago Bianco (White Lake) and Lej Nair (Black Lake).

From this high-altitude, icy landscape, the train started its dramatic descent into the Poschiavo Valley, the charming Italian-speaking town of Poschiavo.

At Ospizio Bernina station, at an elevation of 7400 feet above sea level, the highest station in Europe.
